The longitudinal relationship between early inhibitory control skills and emergent literacy in preschool children

Abstract This study analyses the longitudinal relationship between early inhibitory control skills and subsequent emergent literacy. At Time 1, a sample of 50 typically monolingual Italian toddlers aged 28 to 36 months in their last year day-care was assessed on expressive vocabulary two measures, tapping specifically response inhibition interference suppression. 2, during preschool years, children 49 72 were re-assessed battery literacy tasks including three phonological awareness an orthographic knowledge task. The results hierarchical linear regression suggest that suppression evaluated at 1 is key process acquisition construction both knowledge, even when children’s included analyses. Unlike previous studies, present very young children, thus allowing us explore developmental antecedents important precursors reading writing abilities.
